Taxi to the Sydney Opera House: where cars drop off
The Opera House has removed almost all vehicle movements from its Forecourt for safety. Its parking page says visitors arriving and leaving by taxi or private vehicle are directed to the designated taxi rank on Macquarie Street, past the Wilson car park entrance. From there it is a short walk along the eastern side of Circular Quay to the Forecourt and the Monumental Steps.
For guests with limited mobility, the Opera House offers a drop-off at the Macquarie Street Gatehouse, at the entry to the site just off the roundabout at the bottom of Macquarie Street. The Gatehouse has a driveway for drop-off and turnaround, and it is about 160 metres from the building entry. The Opera House runs an accessible buggy service from there 90 minutes before and 30 minutes after performances in the Joan Sutherland Theatre and the Concert Hall, and on request for other venues. Tell us if you need the Gatehouse when you book.
Sydney Airport to Opera House taxi fare and travel time
The Opera House is about 16 km by road from T1 International, usually around 25 to 35 minutes off-peak via the Eastern Distributor and the city, longer at peak times. A trip from the airport is priced on distance and quoted as a fixed fare that already includes the A$12 airport pickup charge, so the taxi cost from Sydney Airport to the Opera House does not change if traffic is slow on Macquarie Street. Our fare calculator gives an estimate, and the exact price appears when you enter your pickup and drop-off on the booking page.
Arriving on the day of a performance? Most people go to their hotel first. If your flight is tight, we can bring you straight to Macquarie Street; just make sure you can carry anything you bring into the venue, as the car will not wait during the show.

Sydney Opera House transfers after an evening performance
When a Concert Hall performance finishes, a few thousand people leave at once and Circular Quay is busy with ferries, dinner crowds and cruise passengers. A pre-booked return is the easy way out:
- Give us the published finish time when you book.
- We confirm a pickup point on Macquarie Street, near where you were dropped off.
- Call or message your chauffeur as you leave your seat, and walk to the car.
If the Opera House is one stop on a bigger day, we can run a private Sydney city tour beforehand, with a drop-off at Macquarie Street in time for the show.
Hotels, cruise passengers and The Rocks
Many Opera House visitors stay around Circular Quay and The Rocks, or arrive on a cruise ship at the Overseas Passenger Terminal across the Quay. We regularly drive between all three. If you are disembarking and want to see a show before flying out, we can collect you and your luggage from the terminal and keep the plan simple: hotel, performance, then a separate pre-booked car to the airport. See our Overseas Passenger Terminal transfers and Circular Quay airport transfers pages for those legs.
Parking, walking and public transport
Driving yourself is possible: Wilson Parking runs the Sydney Opera House Car Park at 2A Macquarie Street, open 24 hours with about 1,200 bays and a 2.2 metre height limit, with undercover access to the Lower Concourse. Public transport is simple too, as Circular Quay station, ferries and buses are about a six-minute walk away, according to the Opera House.
A private car is the better fit when you are coming from the suburbs or the airport, dressed for an evening out, travelling with older guests, or simply want one fixed price door to door. Groups of up to 11 can travel together in a maxi van.
