Where to watch the fireworks
- Royal Botanic Garden and The Domain: four free vantage points including Mrs Macquarie's Point and Tarpeian Lawn, open 9am to 12.30am and subject to capacity.
- Darling Harbour: its own fireworks at 9pm and midnight over Cockle Bay. Note these are a separate display, so you won't see the main harbour show from here.
- Circular Quay, Hickson Road Reserve and Dawes Point: close to the Harbour Bridge. Popular and they close once full.
- North Shore: Bradfield Park, Blues Point, Cremorne Point and Lavender Bay. Some are ticketed through North Sydney Council.
- Opera House Forecourt: free with booking. Bookings open 10am on 26 December.
Always check the official Sydney New Year's Eve site for current capacity updates before you leave home.
9pm or midnight?
If you have young children, the 9pm show is a highlight in its own right and makes for a far easier night. Older kids and adults who want the full celebration can stay for midnight, but expect long waits for transport afterwards. Check what you can bring: many sites don't allow glass, and some allow no shade structures or umbrellas, so pack a hat, sunscreen, water and a poncho.

Getting there and getting home safely
Transport for NSW and the official NYE site recommend public transport, with extra services running. Travel isn't free that night, so tap on and off with an Opal card or contactless payment. Be ready to walk further than usual between stations and your spot, and note that driving is not recommended because of road closures and limited parking.
If you're staying out of the city centre, or travelling with kids, elderly relatives or luggage, pre-booking a ride home can take the stress out of the night. Call us on 0434 663 034 to talk about pick-up arrangements. We run 24/7 and seat up to 11 in our Maxi vans, and baby and child seats are A$10 each on request.
Make a day of it before the fireworks
Rather than waiting around for hours, spend New Year's Eve morning sightseeing. A private Sydney city tour lets you see the Opera House, The Rocks, Mrs Macquarie's Chair and more at your own pace, then finish near your chosen vantage point. Other days over the break, look at our Christmas and New Year tours and family private tours. Holiday dates fill quickly, so book early.
